ANXIETY: THOUGHTS, TRIGGERS, AND HOW TO OVERCOME IT

Anxiety is a common mental health issue that affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterized by feelings of fear, worry, and nervousness that can be overwhelming and interfere with daily life. While it is a natural response to stress, anxiety can become chronic and debilitating if left unchecked. Anxiety often manifests itself during times of uncertainty and a change in routine. In today’s society, money, work, social media, health, and personal relationships are all common triggers. Anxiety is a natural human response and can be beneficial in certain situations, as it can help us to stay alert and focused.

Identify and Challenge Negative Thoughts

Some people experience anxiety when they feel like they aren’t doing enough in their everyday life or when they feel like they’re running out of time and not living for themselves. Anxiety is often triggered by negative thoughts that spiral out of control. To overcome anxiety, it is important to identify these negative thoughts and challenge them. Ask yourself if they are based on reality or if they are just assumptions or irrational fears. Once you have identified these thoughts, write them down and find solutions to overcome these intrusive thoughts. In doing so, you are actively changing your mindset to be one of positivity and rationality, which can change your view or reality for the better. By being proactive in changing your thought process, you are gaining control of your thought and emotional state and, in turn, your life.

Practice Mindfulness

In my Positive Psychology class, I was introduced to the concept of mindfulness. Mindfulness is a technique that can help you to stay present in the moment and focus on the positive aspects of your life. It involves paying attention to your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings without judgment. Mindfulness can be practiced through meditation, deep breathing exercises, and other relaxation techniques. An easy way to incorporate mindfulness in your daily life is when brushing your teeth. Take note of your surroundings, the time of day, how you feel in that moment. Recognize that you are grounded in the present moment and that whatever else you’re feeling in that moment doesn’t matter. By practicing mindfulness regularly, you can reduce stress and anxiety, and improve your overall well-being.

Write Gratitude Letters

Gratitude letters can promote mindfulness and presence in the moment. By focusing on the positive aspects of our lives and expressing gratitude towards others, we are cultivating a sense of mindfulness and awareness of our surroundings. This can help us to appreciate the present moment and find joy in the simple things in life. Writing gratitude letters has been shown to improve mental health by reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. When we focus on the positive aspects of our lives and express our gratitude towards others, we are less likely to dwell on negative thoughts and feelings. Gratitude can also increase our sense of self-worth and improve our relationships with others.

Exercise Regularly

Exercise is an excellent way to reduce anxiety and boost your mood. Physical activity can release endorphins, which are natural chemicals that promote feelings of well-being and happiness. Exercise also helps to reduce stress and tension in the body, which can contribute to anxiety. Aim to engage in moderate exercise for at least 30 minutes per day, such as brisk walking, cycling, or swimming. I’m personally a fan of workout classes and yoga.

Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is essential for your physical and mental health. Lack of sleep can contribute to anxiety, irritability, and other mood disorders. Aim to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night, and establish a regular sleep routine. Pro tip: don’t look at your phone at least two hours before bed and instead read a paper book.

Seek Professional Help

If your anxiety is severe or persistent, it may be helpful to seek professional help. A mental health professional can provide you with tools and strategies to overcome anxiety, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or medication. CBT is a form of talk therapy that can help you to identify and challenge negative thoughts and behaviors that contribute to anxiety. Medication can also be helpful in managing anxiety, particularly in combination with therapy.

In conclusion,

Anxiety can be a challenging and overwhelming experience, but it is possible to overcome it with the right strategies and support. By identifying negative thoughts, practicing mindfulness, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and seeking professional help when needed, you can regain control of your life and achieve a greater sense of well-being. Remember to be patient and kind to yourself as you work to overcome anxiety, and celebrate your progress along the way.
